Don’t let the first ski run of the season be a big flop. Instead, get in the habit of checking out all of your gear before you hit the slopes for the first time each season. Here’s what your checklist should include.
Equipment
It’s a good idea to do a tune up on your skis each preseason. You’ll want to make sure that there’s no cracks or loose screws in your bindings. Make sure to tighten everything up to ensure that it’s secure.
Base Layers
You never want to be too hot or too cold on the mountain, instead you want to layer your clothes. Start with a good, medium-weight base layer, then put on a good fleece jacket and an additional windproof layer. Make sure that your socks don’t have any holes in their heels. You’ll want to take a few pairs with you so that you have a dry pair available whenever you need them.
Outerwear
While most adults only need to worry about replacing outdated items, children tend to grow quickly and will probably need a new pair of ski pants every winter. Of course, you can always check to see if the hems can be let out first.
Once you have a good jacket and pair of snow pants you’ll want to make sure that you have a comfortable pair of boots to wear. You’ll want to make sure that they fit comfortably as well. If you’re purchasing a new pair of boots, take the time to break them in by wearing them around your home for a while before you hit the hill.
Don’t forget the gloves! You don’t want them to be made from cotton and you do want to have more than one pair. They need to fit properly, allow you to move your hands around freely and be warm too. It never hurts to write children’s names inside of their gloves or for anyone to have an extra pair. After all, you don’t want to wear a pair of wet gloves.
Another thing that shouldn’t be overlooked are the helmets and goggles. Helmets are the norm for both children and adults alike today. This is because they don’t just protect your head but they keep it warm too. Make sure that your goggles fit the helmet that you’re wearing and provide you with optimal vision. If they’re really scratched up, get a new pair.

The Bottom Line
While there may seem like a lot that you need to do, taking the time to get ready now will save you later. All it really takes is just one stop at a local ski shop and you’ll be ready to hit the slopes in no time flat.
